Behavioral and Environmental Factors Contributing to Heat-Related Illnesses Among Travelers

Travelers of tropical or subtropical regions in particular are at higher risk of developing heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when the body temperature reaches high levels and can cause damage to the body and nervous system. There are many factors that contribute to the risk. Internal factors include age, previous medical treatment, dehydration, physical fatigue, and the use of certain medications. On the other hand, high ambient temperature, high humidity, prolonged sun exposure, wearing inappropriate clothing, engaging in strenuous activities, inadequate rest time, lack of cooling mechanisms, and high-pressure relationships are other important factors that make it difficult to survive in high temperatures. When heat stroke occurs, immediate cooling measures should be taken, and then medical attention should be sought to ensure appropriate treatment. The findings highlight the serious effects of dehydration, inappropriate clothing choices, and intense exercise in hot weather.
