Abstract
Electro-chemical process in which current is passed between two electrodes
through an ionised solution (electrolyte) to deposit positive ions on the negative
electrode (cathode) and negative ions on the positive electrode (anode). This
overall system of separating the ions is referred to an electrolytic cell. This
process is called electrolysis.
Electric current causes positively charged hydrogen ions to migrate to the
negatively charged cathode, where a reduction takes place in order to form
hydrogen atoms. Similarly, oxidation takes place at anode, where the oxygen is
gathered.
It is a very well-known fact that hydrogen is a highly combustible gas with an
estimated calorific value of 150kJ/g and that oxygen is a supporter of combustion.
Hence, the Oxy-Hydrogen gas combusts with only water vapour as the
combustion product. This could essentially make it an ideal fuel.
This project gives the complete knowledge about the usage of Oxy-Hydrogen gas
for house-hold and other usages by regulating the flow of gas which we obtained
through the electrolysis of water. We also made an optimization study on the rate
of production of the gas using various catalysts like Commercial Baking soda
(Sodium Bi-Carbonate), Commercially available iodised salt (Sodium Chloride)
and Potassium Hydroxide.
Here, we are using the generated gas to act as a fuel source to run an in-house
fabricated cooking stove. The main objective here is to make an affordable Oxy
Hydrogen powered gas stove which can be used in remote rural areas where they
use firewood to cook food which emits serious amount of pollutants.
