Abstract
Multifunctional nanomaterials are suitable candidates for various water treatment techniques. High surface area, higher chemical reactivity, and better antimicrobial activity make these materials efficient for water remediation processes. Nowadays, the biogenic synthesis route makes these nanomaterials more environmentally safe. Among the nanomaterials, bioactive nanoparticles (NPs) such as metallic NPs, metal oxide NPs, bio-based nanomaterials, and carbon-based nanomaterials, are found to be more effective in water treatment processes due to their good photocatalytic and antimicrobial properties. In this chapter, various bioactive NPs, their synthesis, their antimicrobial properties, and their mechanisms are discussed. Promises and challenges related to the use of bioactive NPs for water treatment processes have also been outlined. © 2024 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Boschstraße 12, 69469 Weinheim, Germany.
